Fingal Head sits on the far northern coast of New South Wales, where the Tasman Sea is strongly influenced by the warm East Australian Current. This helps maintain relatively mild sea water temperatures throughout the year compared with much of the NSW coastline. In summer, water temperatures typically range from about 23°C to 26°C, creating very comfortable conditions for swimming. Autumn remains pleasant, with temperatures usually around 21–24°C before cooling slightly through winter. During winter, sea water temperatures generally sit between 18°C and 20°C, which can feel cool on entry but are still manageable for many swimmers, particularly on clear and sunny days. Spring brings a gradual warm-up, with temperatures returning to the low 20s°C.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming is allowed at Fingal Head and is popular, especially in calmer conditions. The area offers a mix of open ocean beaches and more sheltered spots, including beaches near headlands that can provide some protection from swell. Summer and early autumn are the most comfortable times for swimming, when warmer water allows for longer stays without discomfort. In winter, swimming is still common among locals and experienced ocean users, though some people prefer shorter swims or wear a light wetsuit. Fingal Head is also well known for surfing and snorkelling, with generally good water quality and clear conditions. As with any open ocean location, swimmers usually pay close attention to surf conditions, currents, and weather when choosing where and when to enter the water.
