The Nullarbor coastline in South Australia runs along the edge of the Great Australian Bight and is dominated by high cliffs and open Southern Ocean conditions. Sea water temperatures here are strongly affected by cold ocean currents and exposure, making them cooler than in many other parts of Australia. In summer, sea water temperatures typically range from about 17°C to 20°C, which feels cool rather than warm even on hot days. Autumn sees a gradual cooling to around 15–18°C before winter brings the coldest conditions. During winter, sea water temperatures usually sit between 13°C and 15°C, making the water feel very cold on entry. Spring brings a slow and modest warming, with temperatures generally returning to the mid to high teens by late in the season.

Swimming Conditions

Swimming along the Nullarbor coast is allowed but is very limited in practice due to both water temperature and coastal geography. The rugged cliffs and lack of accessible beaches mean that safe entry points to the water are rare. Even where access is possible, swimming is best suited to the warmer months, when summer water temperatures are at their highest and weather conditions are more stable. Swims are usually short, as cooler water can quickly become uncomfortable without a wetsuit. In winter, swimming is generally unsuitable for casual swimmers due to cold water, strong swells, and exposure. Overall, the Nullarbor coast is better known for its dramatic scenery than for swimming, with water activities largely limited to experienced ocean users who are well prepared and choose conditions carefully.
