Spencer Gulf – Water Temperature near Australia
The Spencer Gulf is the westernmost and larger of two large inlets (the other being Gulf St Vincent) on the southern coast of Australia, in the state of South Australia, facing the Great Australian Bight.
Current Water Temperature
The current water temperature in the Spencer Gulf today is within the range of 19-23°C. Thus, the average water temperature is about 21°C. This water feels mild to warm and is comfortable for the majority of swimmers. Swimming is enjoyable, though longer stays may feel cooler for some people, especially in windy conditions. These temperatures are well suited to family outings and active swimming, particularly on warm days.
It’s important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in settled weather. When air temperatures drop below 20°C — and sometimes even below 25°C — swimming can feel uncomfortable, even when water temperatures are relatively high.

The Spencer Gulf cuts deep into South Australia between the Eyre and Yorke Peninsulas, creating enclosed marine conditions that strongly affect water temperature. Compared with the open Southern Ocean, Spencer Gulf warms and cools more dramatically through the year. In winter, sea temperatures typically drop to around 12–14°C, especially in the upper gulf. During summer, the water warms significantly, commonly reaching 20–23°C, and in shallow northern sections it can occasionally rise to about 24–25°C during prolonged hot weather. This seasonal swing makes the gulf one of the warmer southern waters in Australia at the height of summer.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming in Spencer Gulf is allowed and quite popular in suitable areas, particularly from late spring through early autumn. Summer offers the most comfortable conditions, with warmer water and generally calmer seas than those found along the open southern coast. Many beaches around towns such as Whyalla and Port Lincoln provide relatively sheltered swimming, which suits families and casual swimmers. Outside the warmer months, cooler water temperatures make swimming less appealing for most people, though it is still possible on mild days. Tides, shallow flats, and occasional strong winds can influence conditions, so swimmers tend to choose sheltered spots and warmer periods for a safer and more enjoyable experience.
