*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual river water temperatures may vary by several degrees from the reported values, particularly after heavy rainfall or periods of changing weather. Rainfall, river flow rates, and runoff from cooler upstream areas can significantly affect water temperature, especially in flowing sections and shaded stretches. Air temperature and cloud cover also play an important role, with warm, sunny conditions helping rivers warm up more quickly. As a result, noticeable temperature differences can occur along the same river.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that takes into account real-time river temperature changes, historical data, seasonal patterns, river flow conditions, recent rainfall, and local air temperature. We also factor in broader weather conditions specific to each region of Australia to improve accuracy.

The Avon River in the Gippsland region of Victoria is a fair dinkum beauty, flowing down from the slopes of Mount Wellington before meandering past the town of Stratford. Since it’s fed by the high country, the water temperature can be a bit of a mixed bag. In the scorching heat of summer, the water is usually pretty inviting, sitting around 22°C to 25°C in the shallower pools where the sun can give it a good warming. Come winter, though, you’ll definitely feel the bite as the temperature can plummet to a chilly 10°C or 12°C. It’s the kind of river that changes its tune with the weather, so it pays to check the sky before you head down for a dip.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming is generally allowed and is a popular way to cool off, especially around the pebbly banks at Apex Park in Stratford. It’s a top spot for a splash because the water is usually shallow and clear, making it a ripper for families and little ones. Unlike the rivers up north, you won’t find any salties here, so you can float about without looking over your shoulder. However, the water quality can occasionally be a bit iffy after a big downpour, and the current can pick up pace quite quickly if there's been rain in the ranges. As long as you stick to the calm stretches and keep an eye out for submerged snags, it’s a legendary spot for a freshwater soak.
