Cowes sits on the northern coast of Phillip Island, facing the Bass Strait, and its water temperatures are shaped by the cooler southern ocean but softened by the town’s relatively sheltered position. In summer, the sea usually warms to around 18–22 °C, which feels refreshing but comfortable for swimming on warm days. Autumn often remains mild, with water temperatures commonly between 16–20 °C, while spring is cooler at roughly 14–18 °C as the water gradually warms after winter. During winter, temperatures typically drop to about 11–14 °C, which is quite cold and generally limits swimming to short dips or those wearing wetsuits.
