** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual river water temperatures may vary by several degrees from the reported values, particularly after heavy rainfall or periods of changing weather. Rainfall, river flow rates, and runoff from cooler upstream areas can significantly affect water temperature, especially in flowing sections and shaded stretches. Air temperature and cloud cover also play an important role, with warm, sunny conditions helping rivers warm up more quickly. As a result, noticeable temperature differences can occur along the same river.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that takes into account real-time river temperature changes, historical data, seasonal patterns, river flow conditions, recent rainfall, and local air temperature. We also factor in broader weather conditions specific to each region of Australia to improve accuracy.

The Endeavour River is a legendary stretch of water in Far North Queensland, famously where Captain Cook pulled up his ship for repairs way back when. If you’re checking out the water, you’ll find it stays pretty tropical and warm throughout the year. During the peak of summer, the temperature usually sits around a balmy 28°C or 29°C, and even when winter rolls around, it rarely drops below 21°C. While that sounds like the perfect setup for a splash, the river is a massive tidal system with thick mangroves, meaning the water can get a bit stirred up and murky, especially when the tide is on the move or after a bit of rain.
Swimming Conditions
Now, as much as that warm water might look inviting, you’ve got to be real careful because swimming in the Endeavour River is generally a bad idea. It’s prime territory for estuarine crocodiles—the big salties—and they aren't the type of locals you want to meet while treading water. Because of the croc risk, there are signs posted all over the place warning folks to stay back from the edge. If you’re keen for a dip to beat the heat, you’re far better off heading to one of the nearby freshwater creeks or the local pool in Cooktown where you can have a paddle without worrying about being something's lunch.
