** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual river water temperatures may vary by several degrees from the reported values, particularly after heavy rainfall or periods of changing weather. Rainfall, river flow rates, and runoff from cooler upstream areas can significantly affect water temperature, especially in flowing sections and shaded stretches. Air temperature and cloud cover also play an important role, with warm, sunny conditions helping rivers warm up more quickly. As a result, noticeable temperature differences can occur along the same river.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that takes into account real-time river temperature changes, historical data, seasonal patterns, river flow conditions, recent rainfall, and local air temperature. We also factor in broader weather conditions specific to each region of Australia to improve accuracy.

If you're wandering up through the Coral Coast, you’ll find the Gascoyne River is a bit of a local legend, often called the upside-down river because it mostly flows out of sight beneath the sandy bed. When the rains haven't hit, the river looks like a massive dry track, but the water is still there, tucked away in the aquifers. During the peak of summer, when the mercury hits the mid-thirties, any standing pools like the famous Rocky Pool can get quite warm, often sitting around 28°C to 30°C. In the cooler winter months, the air is still a beauty, but the water temp can dip back to a more refreshing 18°C or 20°C, which is still pretty decent for a paddle if you're not a total sookie about the cold.

Swimming Conditions

Swimming is generally allowed, but it’s a bit of a seasonal gamble depending on whether the river is actually running or if the pools are full. Rocky Pool is the go-to spot east of Carnarvon, where the permanent waterholes are lined with stunning ghost gums. You’ve gotta be a bit careful, though; since it’s an inland waterway, there aren't any lifeguards about, and the water quality can get a bit iffy if it hasn't rained for a long stretch. As long as you check with the locals at the visitor centre and don't go diving into unknown depths where snags might be hiding, it’s a ripper way to experience the real outback. Just watch out for the odd emu or roo coming down for a drink while you’re cooling off!
