*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual river water temperatures may vary by several degrees from the reported values, particularly after heavy rainfall or periods of changing weather. Rainfall, river flow rates, and runoff from cooler upstream areas can significantly affect water temperature, especially in flowing sections and shaded stretches. Air temperature and cloud cover also play an important role, with warm, sunny conditions helping rivers warm up more quickly. As a result, noticeable temperature differences can occur along the same river.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that takes into account real-time river temperature changes, historical data, seasonal patterns, river flow conditions, recent rainfall, and local air temperature. We also factor in broader weather conditions specific to each region of Australia to improve accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Length 328 kilometres (204 mi)
The Katherine River flows through the rugged landscape of the Northern Territory, cutting through sandstone gorges and open savannah country. Its water temperature stays warm for most of the year due to the tropical climate. In the dry season, which runs roughly from May to September, the river usually sits around 24–28°C, making it very comfortable for swimming. During the hotter build-up and wet season months, temperatures often rise to about 28–32°C, especially in slower pools where the water absorbs more heat. Even at its coolest, the river rarely feels cold, which sets it apart from rivers further south.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming in the Katherine River is generally allowed and very popular, particularly during the dry season when water levels are stable and visibility is good. Calm sections within the gorge system are well known for safe swimming, with clear water and minimal current. In the wet season, however, swimming is not recommended. Heavy rain can cause rapid rises in water level, stronger currents, reduced visibility, and an increased risk from wildlife. When conditions are right, the Katherine River offers some of the best freshwater swimming in northern Australia, combining warm water with sheltered pools that provide reliable relief from the intense Top End heat.
