Water Temperature in King George River: Daily Trends, Historical Records, and Forecast

✅ River temperatures above 25°C feel warm and are well suited to leisurely swimming and floating. Comfort remains high even if air temperatures are slightly cooler, though hot weather can make the water feel less refreshing. In slower-flowing rivers, very warm water may feel stagnant, especially during heatwaves. Weather conditions such as strong sun or high humidity can further influence how pleasant the swim feels.

** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual river water temperatures may vary by several degrees from the reported values, particularly after heavy rainfall or periods of changing weather. Rainfall, river flow rates, and runoff from cooler upstream areas can significantly affect water temperature, especially in flowing sections and shaded stretches. Air temperature and cloud cover also play an important role, with warm, sunny conditions helping rivers warm up more quickly. As a result, noticeable temperature differences can occur along the same river.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that takes into account real-time river temperature changes, historical data, seasonal patterns, river flow conditions, recent rainfall, and local air temperature. We also factor in broader weather conditions specific to each region of Australia to improve accuracy.

The King George River is a fair dinkum marvel of the North Kimberley, famous for its massive sandstone gorges and those towering twin falls that drop straight into the tidal waters. Being way up in the tropics, the water temperature is pretty much a warm bath all year round. During the wet season and the start of the dry, you’re looking at temperatures between 27°C and 30°C, which feels lush when the humidity is cranking. Even in the middle of the winter months, the mercury rarely dips below 23°C or 24°C. It’s a spectacular spot to see from a cruise boat, but the water itself can be a bit of a mystery depending on where the tide is at.

Swimming Conditions

Now, when it comes to having a squeeze and a splash, you’ve got to keep your wits about you because the main river is proper saltie country. Swimming in the tidal sections of the King George River is a massive no-go because of estuarine crocodiles, and they aren't the kind of locals you want to be treading water with. However, swimming is definitely allowed and highly recommended once you’ve done the steep hike to the top of the falls. Up there, you’ll find crystal-clear freshwater pools and rock holes that are generally safe from the big lizards and offer a legendary view over the edge. It’s a ripper of a reward after a climb, but always keep an eye out and stay croc-wise near the lower reaches.
