*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual river water temperatures may vary by several degrees from the reported values, particularly after heavy rainfall or periods of changing weather. Rainfall, river flow rates, and runoff from cooler upstream areas can significantly affect water temperature, especially in flowing sections and shaded stretches. Air temperature and cloud cover also play an important role, with warm, sunny conditions helping rivers warm up more quickly. As a result, noticeable temperature differences can occur along the same river.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that takes into account real-time river temperature changes, historical data, seasonal patterns, river flow conditions, recent rainfall, and local air temperature. We also factor in broader weather conditions specific to each region of Australia to improve accuracy.

The McArthur River flows through the Gulf Country of the Northern Territory, and its water temperature is shaped by a hot tropical climate with strong wet and dry seasons. During the Wet Season, roughly December to March, water temperatures are usually warm, commonly around 26–31°C, sometimes dipping briefly when heavy rain and fresh runoff move through the system. Once flows settle, the river warms quickly again. In the Dry Season, from about May to September, conditions are more stable and water temperatures generally sit between 23–28°C. Even in the cooler months, the McArthur rarely feels cold, particularly in deeper pools that hold water year-round and change temperature slowly.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming in the McArthur River is generally allowed, but it needs to be approached with care and local knowledge. In the Dry Season, people may swim in permanent waterholes where the water is clear and calm, and the warm temperature makes it comfortable for more than a quick dip. However, this is crocodile country. Saltwater crocodiles are known to inhabit the river, especially in the lower and middle reaches and after wet seasons. Strong currents during floods, muddy banks and submerged timber also add risk. For these reasons, swimming is best limited to well-known spots and only when current local advice suggests conditions are suitable.
