*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual river water temperatures may vary by several degrees from the reported values, particularly after heavy rainfall or periods of changing weather. Rainfall, river flow rates, and runoff from cooler upstream areas can significantly affect water temperature, especially in flowing sections and shaded stretches. Air temperature and cloud cover also play an important role, with warm, sunny conditions helping rivers warm up more quickly. As a result, noticeable temperature differences can occur along the same river.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that takes into account real-time river temperature changes, historical data, seasonal patterns, river flow conditions, recent rainfall, and local air temperature. We also factor in broader weather conditions specific to each region of Australia to improve accuracy.

The Pioneer River in Mackay is a real standout, being one of the few blue water rivers in Queensland that stays looking sharp for most of the year. If you're heading down for a look, you'll find the water temperature is pretty much a tropical dream. In the height of the wet season, the mercury hits a balmy 28°C or 29°C, making it feel like a warm bath. Even when the winter chill sets in during July, the water rarely drops below 21°C. It’s a cracker of a spot for a bit of platypus spotting or a paddle in the upper reaches, where the water flows fresh and clear over the rocks through the Pioneer Valley.
Swimming Conditions
When it comes to having a proper swim, you’ve got to use your noggin. While taking a dip is allowed and even popular at spots like Platypus Beach near Mirani, the lower reaches near the city are a different story. Mackay is proper croc country, and these waters are home to estuarine crocodiles, so swimming in the deep or murky sections near the mouth is a massive no-go. Most locals prefer the Bluewater Lagoon right in town for a stinger and croc-free soak. If you do head to the river, stick to the clear, shallow freshwater areas further upstream, keep an eye on the tide, and always stay croc-wise so your day out doesn't turn into a shocker.
