The Far West of Victoria, stretching from the Great Ocean Road towards the South Australian border, is home to a wild and rugged coastline defined by the powerful Southern Ocean. Because of its southern latitude and exposure to Antarctic swells, sea water temperatures are amongst the briskest in the state. During the summer peak in February, the water typically ranges between 17°C and 20°C, providing a very sharp and invigorating experience even on the hottest days. In the winter months, particularly August and September, temperatures drop to a chilly 13°C to 15°C. While swimming is popular during the holidays, most regular water users, including surfers and ocean swimmers, rely on high-quality steamers and neoprene boots year-round to manage the significant wind chill and cold water.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming is permitted at many locations, but due to the volatile nature of the coastline, it is strictly governed by safety warnings. The region is famous for its Shipwreck Coast heritage, a testament to the treacherous reefs, heavy swells, and persistent rip currents that characterise the area. Consequently, swimming is only recommended at patrolled beaches such as Bridgewater Bay near Portland or the main beach at Port Fairy, where life saving services operate during the summer season. These supervised zones, marked by red and yellow flags, are essential because help can be far away on this remote stretch of coast. Visitors are also cautioned to avoid swimming near river mouths or after heavy rain, as the runoff can temporarily affect water quality and visibility, making it harder to spot submerged hazards.
