Torquay sits on Victoria’s Surf Coast, facing the open waters of Bass Strait, where sea water temperatures are cooler and more seasonal than in much of Australia. Summer brings the most comfortable conditions, with water temperatures typically ranging from about 16°C to 19°C. These temperatures feel refreshing rather than warm and suit active swimming on mild days. Through autumn, the water gradually cools to around 14–17°C before reaching its coldest point in winter. Winter sea water temperatures usually sit between 12°C and 14°C, which feels very cold on entry and limits time in the water without thermal protection. Spring sees a slow warming trend, with temperatures climbing back toward the mid-teens as summer approaches.

Swimming Conditions

Swimming is allowed in Torquay and is popular during the warmer months, particularly at more sheltered beaches such as Front Beach, where conditions are calmer than along the exposed surf coast. Summer and early autumn offer the best opportunities for swimming, when water temperatures and air temperatures combine to create more comfortable conditions. In winter, casual swimming becomes uncommon due to cold water, although surfers, ocean swimmers and experienced locals continue to enter the sea wearing wetsuits. Torquay is internationally known for surfing, and many people spend extended time in the water thanks to proper thermal gear. Overall, Torquay offers seasonal swimming opportunities that are best suited to summer, with cooler conditions favouring active water use rather than relaxed, warm-water swimming.
