** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual river water temperatures may vary by several degrees from the reported values, particularly after heavy rainfall or periods of changing weather. Rainfall, river flow rates, and runoff from cooler upstream areas can significantly affect water temperature, especially in flowing sections and shaded stretches. Air temperature and cloud cover also play an important role, with warm, sunny conditions helping rivers warm up more quickly. As a result, noticeable temperature differences can occur along the same river.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that takes into account real-time river temperature changes, historical data, seasonal patterns, river flow conditions, recent rainfall, and local air temperature. We also factor in broader weather conditions specific to each region of Australia to improve accuracy.

Location & Local Information

Danggu Gorge, also known as Geikie Gorge, sits along the Fitzroy River in the Kimberley, where the river cuts through ancient limestone ranges. Water temperature here reflects the hot tropical climate of the region. During the Wet Season, roughly from December to March, the Fitzroy runs high and fast, and water temperatures are usually around 26–30°C, sometimes a little cooler when fresh floodwaters are moving through. In the Dry Season, from about May to September, flows are lower and more stable, and water temperatures typically sit between 22–28°C. Even in winter, the water rarely feels cold, especially in deeper sections of the gorge where the sun reaches the rock walls.

Swimming Conditions

Swimming at Danggu Gorge is generally not permitted, despite the inviting look of the water and the warm temperatures. This stretch of the Fitzroy is managed as a protected area, and swimming is discouraged mainly because of safety concerns. The river here has strong currents, deep sections and steep rock walls, and it is also crocodile habitat. Saltwater crocodiles are known to occur in the Fitzroy system, particularly after wet seasons. For these reasons, visitors usually experience the gorge from the lookout or by boat rather than in the water. While the temperature might seem perfect for a swim, Danggu Gorge is best appreciated safely from above or on the river, not in it.
