✅ River temperatures above 25°C feel warm and are well suited to leisurely swimming and floating. ** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual river water temperatures may vary by several degrees from the reported values, particularly after heavy rainfall or periods of changing weather. Rainfall, river flow rates, and runoff from cooler upstream areas can significantly affect water temperature, especially in flowing sections and shaded stretches. Air temperature and cloud cover also play an important role, with warm, sunny conditions helping rivers warm up more quickly. As a result, noticeable temperature differences can occur along the same river.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that takes into account real-time river temperature changes, historical data, seasonal patterns, river flow conditions, recent rainfall, and local air temperature. We also factor in broader weather conditions specific to each region of Australia to improve accuracy.

The Fitzroy River flows through the Kimberley, one of the hottest and most remote regions in the country, and its water temperature reflects the strong tropical climate. During the Wet Season, roughly December to March, water temperatures are usually warm, commonly around 26–32°C, especially in wide reaches and floodplain pools. Heavy rains and fresh runoff can briefly cool the river, but once flows stabilise the water warms quickly again. In the Dry Season, from about May to September, conditions are more settled, with water temperatures generally sitting between 22–28°C. Even in winter, the Fitzroy rarely feels cold, particularly in deep, permanent waterholes that hold water year-round.

Swimming Conditions

Swimming in the Fitzroy River is generally allowed, but it requires real caution and local knowledge. In the Dry Season, people do swim in permanent waterholes, and the warm water makes it comfortable for longer swims. However, the river is home to saltwater crocodiles, and they are known to move well inland, especially after wet years. For this reason, swimming is only considered safe in a small number of well-known spots where local advice confirms conditions. Strong currents during the Wet Season, steep banks and submerged logs also add risk. While the water temperature can be inviting, the Fitzroy is a river to respect first and swim in only when conditions and local guidance allow.
