✅ River temperatures above 25°C feel warm and are well suited to leisurely swimming and floating. ** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual river water temperatures may vary by several degrees from the reported values, particularly after heavy rainfall or periods of changing weather. Rainfall, river flow rates, and runoff from cooler upstream areas can significantly affect water temperature, especially in flowing sections and shaded stretches. Air temperature and cloud cover also play an important role, with warm, sunny conditions helping rivers warm up more quickly. As a result, noticeable temperature differences can occur along the same river.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that takes into account real-time river temperature changes, historical data, seasonal patterns, river flow conditions, recent rainfall, and local air temperature. We also factor in broader weather conditions specific to each region of Australia to improve accuracy.

The Isdell River flows through the remote Kimberley, cutting across rugged sandstone country well away from towns or roads. Water temperature here is driven by the tropical climate and strong seasonal contrasts. During the Wet Season, roughly from December to March, the river can run high and fast, with water temperatures usually around 26–32°C. Fresh rain can cool the water briefly, but once flows settle it warms quickly under the sun. In the Dry Season, from about May to September, the Isdell breaks into a series of permanent pools and slow runs, where temperatures typically sit between 22–28°C. Even in winter, the water rarely feels cold, especially in deeper pools that hold heat overnight.

Swimming Conditions

Swimming in the Isdell River is generally allowed and can be very appealing in the Dry Season. Clear water, rocky pools and gentle cascades make it well suited to swimming when conditions are settled. The warm water temperature is comfortable for proper swimming rather than just a quick dip. Unlike many Kimberley rivers closer to the coast, saltwater crocodiles are not commonly found this far inland, which reduces risk, though caution is still essential. Slippery rocks, sudden depth changes and remote conditions mean swimming should only be done with care and good judgment. With the right timing and awareness, the Isdell offers a classic Kimberley swimming experience.
