*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual river water temperatures may vary by several degrees from the reported values, particularly after heavy rainfall or periods of changing weather. Rainfall, river flow rates, and runoff from cooler upstream areas can significantly affect water temperature, especially in flowing sections and shaded stretches. Air temperature and cloud cover also play an important role, with warm, sunny conditions helping rivers warm up more quickly. As a result, noticeable temperature differences can occur along the same river.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that takes into account real-time river temperature changes, historical data, seasonal patterns, river flow conditions, recent rainfall, and local air temperature. We also factor in broader weather conditions specific to each region of Australia to improve accuracy.

The Molonglo River runs through the Canberra region and shows clear seasonal changes in water temperature, shaped by altitude, weather and regulated flows. In summer, from December to February, the river typically sits around 16–22°C, warming a little more in slow-moving pools during hot spells. Spring and autumn are cooler and more variable, with water temperatures generally in the 12–18°C range. Winter brings a definite chill, and the Molonglo often drops to about 6–10°C, feeling cold even on sunny days. Releases from upstream areas and overnight cold can keep temperatures lower than people expect, especially early in the morning.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming in the Molonglo River is generally allowed, but it’s not a major swimming destination. In summer, some locals enjoy a brief dip in calmer sections, mainly to cool off rather than for long swims. The water temperature is usually tolerable in the warmer months, but still on the cool side compared to inland rivers further west. Water quality can vary, particularly after heavy rain, when runoff affects clarity and safety. There are also rocky banks, shallow stretches and occasional debris to consider. For these reasons, most people prefer nearby lakes or more established river spots, with the Molonglo better suited to short, refreshing dips than relaxed swimming.
