*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual river water temperatures may vary by several degrees from the reported values, particularly after heavy rainfall or periods of changing weather. Rainfall, river flow rates, and runoff from cooler upstream areas can significantly affect water temperature, especially in flowing sections and shaded stretches. Air temperature and cloud cover also play an important role, with warm, sunny conditions helping rivers warm up more quickly. As a result, noticeable temperature differences can occur along the same river.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that takes into account real-time river temperature changes, historical data, seasonal patterns, river flow conditions, recent rainfall, and local air temperature. We also factor in broader weather conditions specific to each region of Australia to improve accuracy.

The Nerang River is the blue heart of the Gold Coast, snaking its way from the hinterland all the way through the glitz of Surfers Paradise. If you’re thinking about a dip, the water temperature is a proper tropical treat for most of the year. During the height of summer, the river water hits a balmy 26°C to 28°C, which is absolute gold when the humidity is cranking. Even when winter rolls around, it rarely drops into freezing territory, usually hovering between a refreshed 18°C and 21°C. It’s a cracker of a spot for a bit of a splash, especially in the shallower, sandy reaches where the sun gives the water a good warming.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming is definitely allowed and is a popular way to escape the heat, with designated swimming enclosures and sandy riverbanks like those at Evandale or Budds Beach being local favourites. However, you’ve got to keep your wits about you because the Nerang is a busy waterway. While taking a soak is fine, you need to be croc-free but shark-wise—bull sharks are known to hang out in the canals and deeper river stretches, so most folks stick to the netted areas or shallower banks. It’s also smart to give it a miss for about three days after a heavy downpour when the runoff can make things a bit murky and the water quality takes a dive. As long as you pick your spot and stay alert, it’s a legendary way to see the Coast from the water.
