Torquay sits at the eastern end of the Great Ocean Road, right on the edge of Bass Strait, and its water temperatures reflect the cool influence of the Southern Ocean. In summer, the sea is at its most comfortable, generally ranging from about 17–20°C, which feels refreshing rather than warm and suits swimming on hot days. Through autumn, temperatures usually ease back to around 15–18°C, while winter brings colder conditions, commonly in the 12–14°C range. Spring is a gradual warm-up period, with water temperatures often sitting between 13–16°C, and occasional cold snaps after strong southerly weather.
