Hobart sits on the Derwent Estuary in southern Tasmania, with its waters influenced by the Tasman Sea but moderated by the river and surrounding land. This keeps water temperatures cool yet fairly stable through the year. In summer, from December to February, temperatures typically range between 16–19 °C, which feels refreshing rather than warm. Autumn sees a gradual cooling to around 14–17 °C, while winter is noticeably colder, usually sitting near 11–13 °C. During spring, the water slowly warms again, commonly reaching about 13–15 °C as longer days and calmer conditions return.
