Taroona sits along the western side of the Derwent Estuary in southern Tasmania, with waters influenced by the Tasman Sea but moderated by the river environment. This results in cool yet relatively stable water temperatures through the year. In summer, from December to February, the water typically reaches around 16–19 °C, which feels refreshing but comfortable enough for swimming on warm days. Autumn brings a gradual cooling to roughly 14–17 °C, while winter is colder, usually around 11–13 °C. During spring, temperatures slowly rise again, commonly sitting between 13–15 °C as daylight increases and weather conditions improve.
