Monterey sits along the western side of Botany Bay, where coastal waters are influenced by both the Tasman Sea and the more sheltered bay conditions. Water temperatures here follow the familiar Sydney seasonal cycle. In summer, from December to March, the water is usually at its warmest, sitting around 21–24 °C and feeling comfortable for most swimmers. Autumn brings a gentle cool-down to roughly 19–21 °C. Winter is the chilliest period, with temperatures typically around 16–18 °C, while spring sees a gradual rise back into the 18–20 °C range as ocean temperatures recover and days become warmer.
